Gum disease is caused by bacterial infection that attack gum ligaments and bone. Often painless, this damaging disease may develop slowly or progress rapidly, so it’s important to have your gums checked often! At Distinctive Laser Dentistry, we make a periodontal screening a part of every exam in our office. If we see signs of trouble, we may recommend a professional gum cleaning. The first step usually involves removing plaque and tartar deposits beneath the gum line. The tooth roots may also be planed to smooth the root surface and allow the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth. Antibiotics or antimicrobial rinses may be recommended to help control the growth of bacteria that create damaging toxins. In some cases, we may even place antibiotic fibers in the periodontal pockets after therapy, to control infection and promote healing.
